Monsters in the Marsh

Glossy Buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula) is an invasive deciduous tree that was introduced from Europe. It has established itself in the Annapolis Royal Marsh and French Basin Trail. As an invasive species it is reducing biodiversity by out-competing native plants. Monsters in the Marsh is a project that will try to reduce the presence of Glossy Buckthorn by removing it and replanting with natives.

1000 Year Tour of the Natural and Cultural History of Annapolis (Junior and Senior High)

The Annapolis River
The 1000 Year Tour of the Natural and Cultural History of Annapolis is a new way for you to experience Annapolis Royal. The 90-minute tour leads you through the interplay of our natural and cultural histories, which creates the landscape we see today. Prior to European settlement humans lived in harmony with the land.

After 1605 we began to reshape landscape and were shaped by it. Join us to discover how our landscape has evolved over the past 1,000 years!

This is an excellent field trip opportunity, suitable for all ages for middle and high school students, garden clubs, naturalist societies, Guides and Scouts and 4-H clubs!

The field trip rate is $2/participant. The tour is 90-minutes in length and the trail is approximately 1.5 km. It is not a strenuous walk but sneakers are suggested. On the walk you will learn about:
  • Mother Nature's Kidneys
  • Salt Marshes
  • First Nations Canoe Routes
  • Acadian Dykelands
  • The Not So Golden Age of Sail
  • The Legend of the Elephant Grass
  • The Missing Link
Trained guides associated with the Clean Annapolis River Project (CARP) lead the tour. CARP is a charitable, non-governmental organization formed to work with communities and organizations to promote the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of the ecosystems of the Annapolis River watershed.

Tours may be booked May-October.
