CARP Receives Support For River Restoration

January 6th, 2010

Annapolis Royal – Clean Annapolis River Project (CARP) has recently received support from the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment and RBC Blue Water Project to support restoration work on the Moose River, Annapolis County.

For the past year, CARP has been working to restore aquatic habitat in the Moose River, which enters the Annapolis Basin at Clementsport. The Moose River has a confirmed history of supporting Atlantic salmon, good water quality, viable spawning habitat and interest among partners to re-build fish stocks.

Murray Freeman, CARP Board member, noted “Barriers to fish passage, such as poorly designed culverts and dams, can prevent fish from accessing critical spawning habitat and lead to reductions in fish populations.”

With this support from the Gulf of Maine Council and RBC, CARP will examine the best approach to restore fish passage past barriers on the river. “The RBC Blue Water Project is pleased to support this project to re-build healthy aquatic habitats in the Moose River” said Beth Fairn, RBC Royal Bank Branch Manager in Annapolis Royal.

The Clean Annapolis River Project (CARP) is a charitable, community-owned corporation with a mission to restore and protect the ecological health of the Annapolis River watershed through science, leadership and community engagement.

Since its formation in 1990, CARP has been involved in over 100 projects related to volunteer water quality monitoring, fish habitat restoration, public education, coastal zone management, private stewardship initiatives, sustainable agriculture and pollution prevention.

CARP and its staff have been the recipient of numerous provincial, national and international awards recognizing its restoration work in the Annapolis valley.
