Annapolis Atmosfarm Project
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions on Annapolis Valley Farms

Annapolis Atmosfarm Outreach Pilot Project is geared towards commercial farms in the Annapolis Valley. Projects goals were to:
  • Identify the greenhouse gases produced from agricultural practices
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Increase carbon sequestration
These methodologies will be transferable to other commercial farms across Canada.

The greenhouse gases of particular concern for this project are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O).

The main portion of the project was to develop a workbook that can be given to farmers. This workbook is designed to provide easily accessible information to help with the operating process of the farm. Each section examines a different topic and how it applies to both the environment and the farmer.

The project has identified 10 areas that can be looked at to reduce greenhouse gases and save the farmer money. These are:
  • Farm Energy
  • Farm Electricity
  • Fuel Efficiency
  • Soil Organic Matter
  • Soil Management
  • Soil Carbons
  • Manure and Methane
  • Greenhouse Gases
  • Agri-Forestry
  • Riparian Zones

The Annapolis Atmosfarm Outreach Pilot Project and the Clean Annapolis River Project asked farmers to make a commitment in the spring of 2001 to incorporate one or more of these greenhouse gas-reducing alternatives.
