Air Quality in the Annapolis Valley

The goal of this project was to undertake a research program within the Annapolis River Watershed. This program investigated elevated levels of ground-level ozone and was designed to increase public awareness of air quality issues within the region.

Many air masses travel to Nova Scotia from regions such as central Canada or the northeastern United States. These air masses bring pollutants with them from more heavily populated areas, which are associated with elevated ozone episodes that occur in the Annapolis Valley.

A ground-level ozone monitor was set up in the area in cooperation with Environment Canada. Passive ozone samplers were set up throughout the region in August of 2000.

An air quality module was developed for Environment Canada's Sky Watchers program and was included for the 2001/2002 school year.

Sky Watchers is a national educational program, sponsored by Environment Canada, which teaches elementary school students a about the environment around them. One of the primary objectives for this project is to develop a chapter on air quality to be included in this program.
