Froglands

Green Frogs (Rana clamitans melanota) are common
throughout Nova Scotia
The Froglands project was created for the development of wetland conservation and stewardship in this region. This program encourages local organizations and schools to adopt a wetland and assume responsibility for its protection.

Using a community stewardship agreement, the degree of protection ranges from a simple letter of understanding to a formal conservation easement under the appropriate Nova Scotia legalization.

The participants are trained and equipped to conduct simple inventories, undertake monitoring and develop and implement ideas for long-term protection of this valued resource.

The goals of this project were:
  1. Expand the Frogland monitoring kit to include inventory, monitoring and management supported by appropriate training. This will involve the development of a community stewardship agreement with landowners, ensuring access to the site by the Frogland Stewardship participants.
  2. Identify community groups and schools that are interested in participating in this wetlands program. This will include development of training and promotional material.
  3. Identify wetlands and community organizations within the watershed that could be included in the program. This would include securing landowner participation.
  4. Research and develop a model stewardship agreement that might be utilized in the project. This may entail negotiations with landowners.
  5. Develop a comprehensive overview of the wetland by and undertake the mapping, inventory and related tasks, utilizing volunteer participants whenever possible.
