Monsters in the Marsh

Glossy buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula)
It is widely accept that invasive alien species represent one of the most significant threats to native biodiversity. Glossy buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula), introduced to North America from Eurasia in the 1800's, is a vigorous shrub species that can rapidly dominate native vegetation.

The presence of glossy buckthorn in the Annapolis Royal Marsh is currently limiting the establishment of native plant species and threatens the biological integrity of the site. In partnership with the Town of Annapolis Royal, the following goals have been set for this project:
  • initiate removal of invasive species
  • increase the cover of native plant species
  • empower local residents in the stewardship of the marsh; and
  • raise awareness about the risks posed by invasive alien species.
Approximately 200-250 native trees and shrubs will be planted at the project site in the next year. This project will create a number of volunteer opportunities for a broad spectrum of individuals to learn about and participate in the ecological restoration of a local nature area. Through community education components, volunteer participants will gain a better understanding of wetland ecology, the impact of invasive alien species and the principles and techniques of restoration.

It is hoped that a growing interest in the stewardship of the Annapolis Royal Marsh will be formalized into a community group. This group, with support from CARP, would ensure the long-term viability of this and other projects in the marsh.
