Annapolis River Watershed Pesticide Inventory
Quantitative pesticide use information is not readily available, particularly at the watershed level. In order to improve the tools available for understanding pesticide usage, CARP initiated the Annapolis River Watershed Pesticide Inventory.

The objectives of this inventory were to:

1. Determine the types and quantities of pesticides used within boundaries of the Annapolis River Watershed. In order to accomplish this task, pesticide use was examined for various sectors, including agriculture, domestic, forestry, large facilities and institutions, marine, municipal and many others

2. Gain a better understanding of pesticide usage patterns in the watershed. In addition to information on the types and quantities of pesticides used, additional data on the frequency of applications and method, target species and area treated were acquired whenever possible.

3. Evaluate multiple data sources in order to determine which is most effective in gathering data. As this inventory was the first of its kind, it was important to evaluate various methods of gathering data in order to assess their relative effectiveness. Collection of data from numerous sources allowed the comparison of data, which in turn maximized the accuracy of results. Furthermore, recommendations on the most effective methods were made to facilitate others undertaking a similar pesticide inventory.

4. Provide a baseline for further studies on pesticide use in the watershed. Further studies of pesticide use in the Annapolis River watershed could be conducted, based on information brought forth by the inventory. This could include completing a relative risk ranking of pesticides, in which the applied quantity, toxicity and exposure of a pesticide are taken into account. Furthermore, soil, air or water samples could be collected and analyzed for pesticide residues in areas where pesticide use is most intense.

The Annapolis River Watershed Pesticide Inventory examined the use of all types of pesticides, including herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides, wood preservatives, antifouling agents, disinfectants, insect repellents and molluscicides.
