Sustainable Agriculture

Corn Harvest
The Annapolis Sustainable Agricultural Project was designed to provide expertise and assistance to farmers who wished to improve the environmental sustainability of their operations. CARP worked closely with these farmers to identify and implement actions to reach this goal.

Some of the activities to improve stability and public awareness included:
  • Educational programs
  • Agri-Forestry
  • The protection and enhancement of riparian zones and wetlands
  • The development of environmental management plans
This project was supported by a number of outside agencies and organizations that provided access to technical expertise and information, giving farmers highly qualified assistance. In addition to this expertise, CARP also helped to find subsidies and volunteer labour to implement these projects.

What Can You Do to Improve Your Own Sustainability?

Improving the environmental sustainability of a farm could include many actions with different levels of commitment from the landowner. Some possible actions include:
  • Proper disposal of used machinery fluids, fertilizer and chemical containers
  • Finding alternate watering sources and controlling livestock access to waterways
  • Wetland enhancement for wildlife habitat and waste treatment
  • Allowing adequate vegetated buffer zones between agricultural lands and waterways
  • Hedgerow planting to reduce wind erosion and reduce crop damage
  • Improving manure management practices
  • Ensuring high quality water supplies for home, livestock and irrigation
  • Recycling of fruit and vegetable by-product and cull wastes
