Integrated Watershed Management
Water as a resource is becoming increasingly important to Nova Scotians and all Canadians. There are several independent initiatives that appear to be converging around the notion of integrated watershed management. A recent Environment Canada report highlights aspects of water issues that are being felt nationally. In addition, Environment Canada is in the process of reviewing its programs related to ecosystem initiatives at the national level.

In Atlantic Canada, the various communities involved in the Atlantic Ecosystem Initiative are part of this review. The Nova Scotia government is in the early stages of developing a comprehensive water strategy. Municipal governments are finding that often they are called upon to address the negative outcomes of poorly managed water resources. Increasingly, watershed groups in the province are finding that the fruits of their efforts are not being fully realized as there is no legislative framework related to water management.

CARP is working to provide options for a local solution to this challenge. A document outlining possible governance models for integrated watershed management in Nova Scotia is the intended outcome for this project. As an extension to this, CARP is seeking funding to organize a think-tank session in partnership with the Arthur Irving Academy for the Environment at Acadia University.

Participants would be would be those with knowledge about and an interest in Integrated Watershed Management, including academics, public servants, First Nations, resource users and community stakeholders. The workshop would be structured to promote a highly interactive process that explores many options.
