Lawns to Gardens

Past Project

In Summer 2018 CARP is piloting a Lawns to Gardens program in order to encourage community members to convert their lawn spaces to garden spaces.

What are some of the reasons to use our yards as gardens instead of lawns?

  • Gardens provide space to grow fresh produce, increasing access to nutritious foods

  • Gardens provide habitat for wildlife such as pollinating insects and birds

  • Gardens provide a great hands-on learning experience for the family

  • Replacing lawns reduces or eliminates the need to mow (reducing the use of gas in the process)

  • Gardening is an outdoor hobby which can reduce stress and anxiety

  • Gardening creates an opportunity to explore and appreciate the natural world

  • Gardening increases the biodiversity in our communities

We are working with community volunteers who have formed our Lawns to Gardens team. These people will act as mentors and resources to help get new households growing.
